Showtime's new costume soap kicks off tonight with Spaniard Rodrigo Borgia's (Jeremy Irons) corrupt ascent to the papacy in 1492 Rome. There's double crossing, sex, and murder aplenty here, as a cabal of cardinals plots to bring down the scheming Borgia clan. The storytelling can feel sluggish at times, but as the ruthless, morally bankrupt pope (dude has two mistresses and four kids!), Irons is at his creepy, dead-eyed-stare best. B
