Diplo, taking time out of his busy schedule.
Diplo, taking time out of his busy schedule.
 [ LOCAL MUSIC NEWS ]

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Our Band Could Be Your Life , Michael Azerrad’s essential tome about 13 pioneers of the ’80s indie underground, the Bowery Ballroom is hosting the mother of all karaoke nights, with young indie bands covering the hits of the book’s many stars. This is bonkers: Ted Leo doing Minor Threat, Titus Andronicus doing the Replacements, Tune-Yards playing Sonic Youth, and Dan Deacon doing a set from a particular band of Texas surfers whose actual name might set your spam filters on fire. Other bands include members of Dirty Projectors (Black Flag), Delicate Steve (Minutemen), St. Vincent (Big Black), Wye Oak (Dinosaur Jr.), and Buke & Gass making wild mincemeat of Fugazi. Tickets are $25, which could buy you like five Fugazi shows, but it’s still totally worth it. We can’t wait for the next edition, which shows the hard-road struggles of newer bands snuggling up to Mountain Dew and Nike and the Grammys.

Todd P, Brooklyn’s busiest under-underground promoter, told New York’s Grub Street that he’s planning to take over the former Mo Pitkins space in Manhattan for a new venue, promising “Pacific-coast-style Mexican food” and bands galore. He says the venue will be more geared towards the “avant-experimental” vibe of departed club Tonic, so no need to worry about reeking Pratt kids in headbands dripping Japanther stink all over your taco. Says P, “The hope is to bring a home back to Manhattan for esoteric performance” which sounds OK to us even without the promise of lime-cured fish to snack on. Your fellow hipsters raise a Mexican Coke in your honor, Todd.

Partner Message Our beloved Roseland Ballroom caught on fire at 10:30 Tuesday night. Luckily, no bands were playing that night, and the damage seems minimal: Six firemen suffered minor injuries, and we might have to go somewhere else to see Janelle Monáe. Here’s hoping they get it back in order before we start pulling from our database of hacky “the roof is on fire” jokes.

Lincoln Center announced the starting lineup of its 2011 Festival, taking place July 5 to August 14. There’s a lot of boring ballet and opera and theater and stuff that you can seek out on your own time. But we’re psyched about the appearance of Tropicália legend Tom Zé, who will be making a rare concert appearance on July 19. Also in the works: a night of Danish Chamber music, and a four-night residency of the Cleveland Orchestra doing pieces by John Adams and Anton Bruckner. Go, smart stuff, go!

[ WHAT'S NEW ON SOUND OF THE CITY ]

Diplo is a perpetually busy DJ, producer, label head, and Blackberry enthusiast. Our own Puja Patel somehow got dude to sit still for 20 minutes to talk about what he’s up to next. For starters, he’s got a show on the Travel Channel (please let it be him DJing while Andrew Zimmern eats a platypus heart), another album on the way from cartoony dancehall duo Major Lazer, a music initiative for underprivileged kids, and a gig playing the first DJ set on the moon (OK, that one we made up). Also in there, stuff about him working with Kanye and getting drunk with an Olsen twin. Hurry before the man releases another five mixtapes and the interview’s outdated! Read more >

You may not know Angela “Mecca” Scott, but she’s the secret weapon of one of your favorite albums. At age 17, she was flown up from Virginia to sing the chorus “Feelin’ It” on Jay-Z’s earth-shattering 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt. Her solo career promptly stalled after that, but she’s finally returned with a proper debut, Angela Scott Vs. Mecca . Our resident hip-hop minutiae obsessive Phillip Mlynar got in touch and talked to her about working with Jay-Z (naturally), Big L, and even a Real Housewife of Atlanta! Grab a glass of Moet and chill with a piece of hip-hop history. Can’t knock our hustle: Read more >

Being vigilant moths to the flame of rap-hater drama, the Voice has full, insane coverage of a Park Slope business owner’s campaign against “another Yo MTV Raps'bling-bling' vip club" opening on her beloved Flatbush Avenue. We have a transcript of the full, original petition (which includes howlers like “I don't think anyone would deny that Park Slopers are about the least ‘racist’ people on the planet”). We also have a round-up of all the hilariously mean things people did to ruin her petition. As a bonus, we even asked a cabal of 15 rock critics if they even know who hosted Yo! MTV Raps . We love hip-hop and love drama even more. What’s beef? Read more >
