And here's what that Fat Beats Brooklyn thing will look like.
 [ LOCAL MUSIC NEWS ]

Art-rock mathletes Battles have returned with the full details of their epic return. Their upcoming album, Gloss Drop (due June 7), is their first since 2007 and the first since the departure of Tyondai Braxton, the band’s hypothetical “singer” (you know, since “making a bunch of pitch-shifted mouth noise” technically constitutes singing). The band has officially soldiered on as a trio, but gotten a pretty formidable guest list to help out with the more human-after-all parts. The album features guests spots from synth pioneer Gary Numan, Chilean/German techno upstart Matias Aguayo, Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino, and lead Boredom Yamantaka Eye. Plus the band is curating a day of All Tomorrow’s Parties in England in December—which should be easy, since their album pretty much feels like an ATP lineup. And Braxton certainly isn’t resting on his laurels—he’s got a show at Lincoln Center on Monday, backed by the 30-piece Wordless Music Orchestra, a/k/a the only orchestra to hate words more than us.

Trash-banging New York noise-pop bashers Skeleton Key were one of the more unlikely bands to reap a major label deal in the ’90s, what with the whole “our drummer basically tours with pointy, rusty metal objects” thing that made airport security furious. But after a brief, awesome dalliance on Ipecac, they’re returning with their third album—funded by Kickstarter, natch. If you buy in, you can get sweet bonuses like creepy marionette heads made by frontman Erik Sanko, or the right to watch your mailman cut his hand open on a used percussion sawblade straight from junk-clanger Benjamin Clapp. Help these dudes out, or this trash is just gonna pile up in the street: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1765386927/skeleton-key-new-album-release

Partner Message Our Technics SP-1200 is still stained with tears after the closing of Fat Beats, the greatest hip-hop record store in New York . . . or anywhere else for that matter. Well, to help our grief, they’re starting the FB BK warehouse parties, a series of pop-up events in their Brooklyn warehouse. Says the team, “FB BK will be reminiscent of the atmosphere and energy that the NY and L.A. stores once exuded. We have DJs of note spinning throughout the day, such as DJ Evil Dee, DJ Spinna, and Rich Medina." Awesome DJs, a chance to spend money on records, and no need to take the subway into Manhattan? Record Store Day can just eat their dust. The first one is this Saturday from noon to 8 p.m., 10 Bridge Street in Brooklyn, on the third floor. See you there. We’ll be one of the 700 dudes with a Castro cap and oversized headphones.

It’s probably a good time to mention that that the Village Voice and Frank 151 SXSW party is going to be maybe the best thing imaginable. Come to the Austin Music Hall fully bloated with BBQ and the 10 Coronas you’ve had since noon on March 17 to see the mighty Wu-Tang Clan, Fishbone, Yelawolf, Trae Tha Truth, Marz Lovejoy, Rocky Business, Trouble Andrew, Wild Flag, and Ume. Also, there’ll be a DJ set from none other than Erykah Badu, who we hope will play her pals Matt & Kim all night. If you’re not going to SXSW, just put on 36 Chambers really loud and drink about a gallon of enchilada sauce for us.

[ WHAT'S NEW ON SOUND OF THE CITY ]

Screw you, Reznor. The real indie-rock winner at the 83rd annual Academy Awards was Brooklyn’s own Gregory Brothers—a/k/a the Auto-Tune The News Guys (and Girl), who provided the telecast with a hilarious montage of electro-twerked Ron Weasley, Woody the Cowboy, and the Twilight gang. Our own Camille Dodero caught up with the dudes (no word if their conversation was eventually Auto-Tuned) and found out that the Academy is actually kind of “hip” (really!), and that making a Harry Potter “booty jam” is totally natural. Hide your kids, hide your wife, because we’re ruining everyone’s productivity out here. Cli-i-i-i-ick He-EE-ee-EE-re: Read more >

New York electronic-music auteur Nicolas Jaar has been sweeping the Internet this year with his multi-layered, dub-inflected teenage symphonies to anguish. The 21-year-old savant technically makes “dance music,” but we don’t see anyone dancing to these slow-motion bum-outs any time soon. Our own Phil Freeman gets to the bottom of this disparity in a Q&A: Learn about Jaar’s desires to engulf his listeners in sound, and how his comparative literature classes (!) are informing his future work. Hot Derridamn! Read more >

New Orleans soul singer Willie West is a living treasure among the dusty fingers of deep-funk 45 collectors. After a long trip through the hands of collectors and geeks, the inestimable Numero Group is finally reissuing his brilliant, shockingly confessional 1977 album Telling the Truth. To celebrate, our own Philip Mlynar caught up with the legend to talk to him about borrowing bandanas from Jimi Hendrix, singing for Ike & Tina, helping Lee Dorsey go clothes-shopping, and traversing the inner workings of the Meters. Show some respect, crumb-snatchers! Check it out: Read more >

Our local music MP3 column, Yes in My Backyard, has returned for another week of fabulous freebies and RIAA-defying hijinks. Start off with a new one from folkie cosmonaut D. Charles Speer, whose new album is a shimmering tribute to his Greek heritage, including some fleet Faheyesque finger-picking on a bouzouki. Follow that up with a Loko-soaked rager by electro-punk-hoppers Death Set, whose new album is a pizza party on wax. Load up that iPod, because it’s gonna be a long winter. Read more >
