Local heroes like School Of Seven Bells, Noveller, Zeena Parkins, Oneohtrix Point Never, D. Charles Speer, Nat Baldwin, Rhys Chatham, Growing, Bear In Heaven, Mountains and Parts & Labor are all part of an essential five-hour, 64-track compilation put together by Thrill Jockey Records that benefits Japanese emergency response organization Civic Force. If you’re a little less adventurous in your tastes, there’s a great iTunes benefit comp where you can get iconic tracks by famous New Yorkers like John Lennon, Lady Gaga, Norah Jones and Bob Dylan. Also: Norah is going to join Thurston Moore for two benefit shows at Abrons Art Center; and Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson and Philip Glass are appearing at a 12-hour concert at the Japan Society. For a complete musical guide on how you can help, click here:http://bit.ly/efpg48 Hang those static-reducing stockings with care, because Record Store Day is almost upon us! Twenty-two local stores will participate in the esteemed event on April 16—the most coveted prizes being a Flaming Lips vinyl box set, a pink vinyl version of Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love , and a Lady Gaga picture disc that will immediately clog the used bins of 2012. But if you want to support local bands in style, there’s no shortage of New York goodies to grab. The 7” seems to be the way to go, as the event will see a remix 7” by increasingly huge buzzband Cults, a Matt & Kim 7” (featuring a collabo with sissy-bounce star Big Freedia), a taste of the upcoming Vivian Girls album (with an exclusive B-side), a Fat Beats single from Brooklyn’s own CSC Funk Band, and something assuredly stomach-churning from noise-mutant Prurient. Fans of bigger formats can pick up some non-album tracks from Antony & The Johnsons on a limited 10” EP (900 copies only!), a split LP featuring local black metal meditation artists Liturgy (teaming with electronic deconstructionist Oval), and the long-awaited American release of the 1993 Whore's Moaning EP by Sonic Youth. No arrests have been mad,e and police are unsure of the motive. His manager released the following statement, “Mega’s family is grateful for all of the condolences and warm thoughts of his fans and friends. Please continue to uplift your prayers of support as an ongoing investigation is currently being conducted by law enforcement officials.” | | | [ WHAT'S NEW ON SOUND OF THE CITY ] | | | | So, what was that bulge in Ponytail’s pants? The Baltimorean band-as-pizza-party has a new album coming out, and our own Jamie Peck got right down to business in her Q&A, starting off with asking why frontperson Molly Siegel had a big bulge while playing the Siren Festival. The interview moves promptly along to naked hippie farm retreats, the male-dominated indie rock world, and some pretty intense discussion on gender. It’s a fascinating read that’s way more intense and personal than when we ask Grizzly Bear where they like to get burgers. Check it out: Read more > | | We asked rap legend Pharoahe Monch about Twitter, pizza and porno. We then realized there’s nothing left on earth to talk about, so we promptly hung up the phone. Actually, our own Philip Mlynar actually got way more intense—getting some eye-opening anecdotes about the violence Monch witnessed in Queens, the birth of his legendary crew Organized Konfusion, his brief stint as a beat-boxer and even the importance of watching Sting’s VH1 Storytellers. Yep, “Fields Of Gold” now has a footnote in rap history. Even though dude is a wormy indie rocker in the Modest Mouse tradition, our own Jayson Greene asked about his favorite Bob Seger song (hint: It’s not the one from Beverley Hills Cop II) and the single Neil Young note that changed his life. This note was indeed for you after all. Check it out: Read more > | | If you didn’t know, its been a heckuva month for home-brewed R&B. Between the Frank Ocean mixtape and the Drake-cosigned mystery group The Weeknd, contemporary crooners are aiming squarely at the Tumblr demo (Eric Harvey already called it PBR&B, which is too delicious not to repeat). Our own Sean Fennessey breaks down the micro-movement—what it means, where it's going—and whether it’s really right to throw around the word “hipster” when even the girls from Floetry are covering Portishead songs these days.
